UAA Medical Anatomy Terminology Booklet

Waqa-a Students, Staff, and Community Members,

My name is Mary Reeve Hobson and I am the UAA RRANN Student Success Facilitator who is so fortunate to be able to work with our future indigenous nurses!

We are excited to begin this journey in creating a UAA Medical Anatomy Terminology Booklet in collaboration with many of you!

I have shared with our awesome future indigenous nursing students that by being able to speak in our Native languages how important and valued a patient must feel when they hear Native words from their health care providers in making that powerful respectful connection.  One student shared that just by using a couple of words, her elderly female Native patient’s face lit up when she heard a couple of Native words!  It has been a dream of mine to have medical terms and gentle commands available in our indigenous languages for our health care providers in order to better connect with their patients. And the time is now!

Please, if you’d like to participate in this exciting endeavor, open the link below and indicate which times are best for you and we’ll take it from there.  And based on who responds to this email, we may have some interested folks who live outside of Anchorage and we will be able to meet with them via teleconferencing or better yet, video conferencing.

Not only are we excited about using our Native languages, we are also inviting those who may want to use their respective cultural languages in this effort. I am also wanting to include American Sign Language.  The goal is to have this collaborative project completed hopefully by the end of the Spring semester 2013.  I am sure your ‘wheels’ are turning as fast as mine as this book may be useful to many other health care or safety care providers … I am thinking along the lines of Nursing, Xray, Dental, Optometry, Community Health Aides, and even emergency medical care personnel and perhaps the police who serve in Alaska.  You get the idea!

Please open this Doodle Calendar link to indicate your preference in meeting times. Based on how many sign up, we’ll decide the time and location of the first meeting. We’d like to begin this process very soon which is next Friday, February 8, 2013http://www.doodle.com/dyaxc365ffvxmb6q

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at 786-4714 or you can email me at anmfr@uaa.alaska.edu.

I am in the process of securing a meeting place hopefully in our new beautiful Health Sciences Building (HSB).  As soon as I get the room confirmed, I will be contacting you then.  Until then, keep thinking creatively and have a wonderful weekend!
